Site: Sorel is a meditation on the real and imaginary spaces left behind by the dead. In this work, Ciarrocchi conjures an image of Barbara Sorel, an author, and fixture of the 1990’s lesbian bar scene. Sorel sold drugs to support her writing and, in a horrible twist of fate, was brutally murdered in her East Village apartment during a drug deal gone wrong. Some of her writing remains, and there is an obituary in a 1999 copy of the Village Voice. Apart from this, she is largely forgotten by history. Combining my memories with text from Sorel’s self-published book Sorel in Love, I merge language and image to reveal where our experiences overlap in reality and my imagination.
